Carpenter is taken to the Little Angels Of Mending Reform House following the death of her grandmother and the arrest of her older brother. She prays to Augustus here, telling him to follow the Trawler-man's will. The pond doesn't seem to respond to her. After she hears about Em's death on the news, Carpenter goes to the pond and finds all the goldfish there dead and the water dark with a tide.[1]
Todd lives at the Little Angels of Mending Reform House. He and Carpenter are close friends. He asks her to be in a relationship with him, turning cruel when she rejects him.[2]
